For decades, I've been saying that Elvis Presley's version of "Bridge Over Troubled Water," from his 1970 concert album, "That's The Way It Is," is absolutely one of the greatest things I've ever heard. (And Paul Simon, who wrote it, agrees.) It's the rehearsal version, from that album, that'll really blow your mind, and famed film director Baz Luhrmann has now gathered all of the best Presley concert footage from that time, and all of the rehearsal footage, and combined it with some of the best footage from 1972's "Elvis On Tour" to create the ultimate Elvis concert experience, "EPiC: ELVIS PRESLEY IN CONCERT." Perhaps the even bigger news is that Luhrmann also unearthed 67 reels of unreleased Elvis footage, from that same time period (1970-1972), that had been locked away for 50 years. And, though it's well known that Presley rarely did interviews, he also discovered, in those same vaults, a wonderfully relaxed and candid 45-minute lost Elvis interview. The best parts of those discoveries can also be seen and heard in "EPiC." And it's all been digitally re-mastered, re-edited and given the full Baz bigger-than-life directorial and cinematic treatment. The reviews this week have been overwhelming positive. "Stunning." "Electrifying." "Dazzling." "Exhilarating." "A Big Screen Must." Two separate publications called it the greatest concert film ever made. Tonight, I made a little road trip, to Allentown, to see it in IMAX, and on this podcast you can listen to my review/commentary, and as well as some other thoughts on Elvis.
