CI_A_1001 This animation shows how arterial vasospasm can cause embolic stroke. It begins with an anterior view of a figure with skull, heart and major vessels of the neck visible. The view focuses on the neck and the arteries are labeled. The view rotates to the right side and the segmental and radicular arteries are labeled. Blood flow through the neck is shown. The scene shifts to an axial view of a cervical vertebrae and its arterial supply. An anesthetic syringe disrupts a segmental artery. A cross-section of the vessel shows how vasospasm can lead to clot formation. Back at the axial view, the clot runs the length of the artery. A piece breaks off and flows to the back of the spinal cord. This causes a section of ischemia in the spinal cord.
