In this video, I walk you through my experience updating the R36S clone handheld. I tried updating the system directly from the device over WiFi, but the WiFi dongle didn’t work, so I used a USB-C to Ethernet adapter instead. The update went through, but unfortunately, it installed an older firmware (03292025) instead of the latest version. That update completely messed up the controls — the D-pad stopped responding, and the joysticks were mixed up. When I tried fixing it in EmulationStation and RetroArch, the device started showing a “no gamepads detected” error at startup. To fix everything, I downloaded the new image file from the official R36S GitHub page and reflashed my microSD card. Before flashing, I backed up the boot folders so I could reuse my original .dtb file. After restoring that file, the R36S clone started working fine again! The only thing missing after the reflash was Thememaster, which wasn’t preinstalled in the new image. I’ll be looking into how to install that manually and will post another video with instructions soon. 👉 My recommendation: If you own an R36S clone and want to update, don’t use the online updater. Instead, download the latest image from GitHub and reflash your card. Just remember to back up your boot files first! Thanks for watching, and I’ll see you in the next video.
