“Birir Valley Chitral | Exploring the Hidden Gem of Kalash Valleys”‏“Where few tourists go”|S01 EP4 The Kalash people of Pakistan live in only three valleys—Birir Valley, Bumburet Valley, and Rumbur Valley. Most travelers head straight to Bumburet, which has 8 villages and more tourism facilities. But this time, I wanted something different. So, I decided to start my Kalash exploration from Barir Valley, the least visited and most authentic of the three. Barir Valley has around 6 small villages tucked deep inside the Hindu Kush mountains of Chitral, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The valley’s total population is only about 3,000–3,500 people, with the majority belonging to the Kalash tribe and a small number of Muslim families. The Kalash people have their own unique polytheistic religion, centuries-old traditions, and vibrant festivals like Chilam Joshi, Uchal, and Choimus. Literacy rates here are improving but still lower than Pakistan’s average—only about 40–45%, with fewer opportunities for higher education. When I arrived, there were no festival celebrations happening, so I didn’t see the famous Kalash dresses and dances. Instead, I experienced something much more raw and real—daily life in its purest form. I saw their old graveyard, where they once left their dead in wooden boxes above the ground on mountain edges (a centuries-old tradition), though today, most are buried under soil due to changing customs Barir Valley is more than just a destination—it’s a place where time slows down, where you can feel the heartbeat of the mountains and the stories of an ancient people still alive in every stone, every path, and every smile. If you want to experience real Kalash culture away from the crowds, this is where you should begin. In this travel vlog, I started my day early in Mirkhani, where I had camped overnight. The morning began with a delicious breakfast, kindly served by Riaz Bhai, the owner of the place. After breakfast, I showed the camping area and then planned to visit the Nagar Fort nearby. When I reached Nagar Fort, the army officials stopped me at the gate, took my ID card, and informed me that the fort was closed. However, they allowed me to visit the Nagar Garden, where I explored the garden, saw a restaurant, and even a hotel under construction. On the way back, I stopped at Drosh Bazaar to change my bike’s engine oil and fix the loose chain. After that, I continued my journey towards Bireer Village in the Kalash Valley. In Bireer, I explored the Kalash traditional houses, a temple, and their storerooms for fruits. I also visited another nearby village called Aspar, where I saw more traditional houses, another temple, and even an old graveyard. After finishing the tour, I returned back from Bireer, and in the next video I will take you to Bumburet Valley.
