Various of old town Sarajevo lit up for Ramadan STORYLINE: Muslims in Sarajevo ushered in the first day of the holy month of Ramadan with cannon fire and the release of hundreds of colourful balloons. During Ramadan, observant Muslims fast daily from dawn to sunset. For Muslims, it’s a time for increased worship, religious reflection and charity. The month often brings families and friends together to break their fast in joyous gatherings. In Sarajevo, crowds came together in the old town to welcome the start of iftar (fast breaking). Adil Babic has been a cannon operator in the old town for decades. His daily cannon fire signifies the time for iftar. "Ramadan means a lot of excitement for me. I will be firing a cannon shot every day to mark the end of the daily fast and the beginning of iftar meals. Every day from today, until Ramadan is over," he says. The cannon fire was introduced by Ottoman rulers in 14th century in Bosnia to inform residents that the sun had set and it was time for iftar. During the holy month, bakeries in Bosnia are extra busy preparing somun, a special Ramadan flat bread popular for iftar meals. In Sarajevo, long lines formed at bakeries in anticipation of iftar. The daylong fasting is aimed at bringing the faithful closer to God and reminding them of the suffering of the poor. Muslims are expected to strictly observe daily prayers and engage in heightened religious contemplation. “Today, I want to wish everyone peace, to enjoy (Ramadan) within their own families, to enjoy in their community. I wish for everyone to express their wishes to God at this time, because that is how the wishes can come true," said local resident Lejla Tricic, who wore traditional Bosnian clothes especially for Ramadan.
