How Is Nylon Made In Factories? -- Nylon production in factories begins with a chemical process called condensation polymerization. The most common type, Nylon 6,6, is made by reacting two monomers derived from crude oil: hexamethylenediamine and adipic acid. These chemicals are heated together in a pressurized reactor, causing them to link into long, repeating polymer chains and form a molten substance known as nylon salt, releasing water as a byproduct. This molten polymer is then extruded through a spinneret, a device resembling a showerhead with thousands of tiny holes, to create continuous filaments. As these filaments emerge, they are cooled by a blast of air, which causes them to solidify. The crucial final step is "drawing," where these solid fibers are mechanically stretched to several times their original length.
