When teachers make positive initial first contact with parents and guardians, they make future conversations, both positive and corrective, easier! One simple and effective way to establish a great tone with adults from home is to make the most of Open House. This event usually happens at the beginning of a year or semester, when everyone has energy and is freshly committed to success. Teachers can capitalize upon this new start with a well-planned Open House. Prepare for your Open House by sending several reminders to families well in advance of the Open House via email, notes, social media, and your school messenger system. Display a sign-in sheet, information about yourself, and copies of important forms. Make sure to show off student work and evidence of the projects and activities you have assigned so parents can see what happens in the classroom. Share sample schedules, tips for helping students with homework, and your behavior expectations to make parents and guardians feel like they are a part of their child’s educational experience. Then, follow up with parents and guardians who attend the Open House to maintain communication with them and encourage them to volunteer resources and time when they can. 1) What do my parents and guardians need at my Open House in order for them to feel welcome and included in my classroom? 2) What important procedures and tips will I want to share with all of my parents and guardians? How can I deliver this information to them in an effective way during the Open House? 3) How will I know my Open House was a success? How will I keep track of what I would like to change for the next Open House?
