We saw a video some time ago from Carl Jacobson on how to burn wood using the Lichtenberg fractal burning method, and thought it was the coolest thing. We used it in one of our other videos, and recently got a request to do more 'Lightning Art'. In answer to that, we took three pieces of wood, cut them up into different shapes and fired up our Conestoga Works Lichtenberg wood burner, and created this abstract piece of wall art. Also referred to as 'Fractal Burning', the effect is created using this device, along with a simple mixture of baking soda and hot water. This mixture helps to conduct and direct the high voltage electricity, creating an arc between the two probes of the burner, and creates the branching, tree-like patterns you see here. Next, we washed and lightly scrubbed the boards to get rid of the soot from the burning, and then let them fully dry. After lightly sanding them, we applied several coats of wipe on poly to nicely finish off the piece.
