Geothermal Resource Group (GRG) provides drilling engineering, onsite drilling management and supervision, off- or on-site drilling engineering support, resource analysis and well site geology. GRG is renowned for completion of production and injection wells that remain mechanically sound for the planned life of a geothermal power facility. Domestic and international customers have realized large savings in final well completion cost and improved well quality using GRG’s services. GRG’s international engineering staff has experience designing and drilling wells in nearly every major geothermal field in the world. Every type of well and productive phase including high enthalpy flash plant wells, moderate enthalpy binary production, and low-enthalpy direct-use, have been designed, planned, and managed by our engineering staff. As important, GRG staff has hands-on skill in addition to technical knowledge – every drilling engineer on staff has also worked as a drilling supervisor and field coordinator. The result is a drilling engineering staff that has seen the problems, and that knows how to resolve the problems in a method that is appropriate to the realities of remote job sites. Employing experienced drilling engineers to support the on-site personnel is one of the best ways to ensure success while drilling. GRG offers off-site drilling engineering and geosciences support as a value-added service to the planned geothermal development drilling. GRG personnel actively monitors daily drilling operations and remains in daily or more frequent communication with the field supervisors and well site geologists. If our engineers and geoscientists identify a deficiency in the drilling and geological conditions or procedures, or otherwise determine that a better method might be applicable, recommendations for improvements to modify the drilling operation and geological program can be made quickly and will be given to the team. GRG’s drilling supervision team is recognized as the most experienced, dedicated, and responsive to customer needs. GRG drilling supervisors are among the most experienced in the world. Our drilling supervision staff each have, on average, more than seven years of drilling supervision experience and more than 20 years of experience in the drilling industry. All our supervisory staff hold either valid IADC or IWCF well control certificates and are experts in handling drilling operations in highly fractured and volcanic formations. GRG supervisors have been trained to deal with the problems common to geothermal drilling, including loss of circulation, special cementing techniques, and geothermal well control. GRG has handpicked these supervisors with a keen sense of the need for the breadth of skills required to successfully drill all types of geothermal wells. GRG has also provided senior expatriate and local geothermal well site geologists as well as local well site geologists on several projects. Most notably is a model that has worked for a large development in Indonesia wherein, with ongoing mentorship and training from the expatriate senior wellsite geologists, local geologists were able to move in to the supervisory role as development progressed. GRG geologists are experienced geothermal geoscientists that can work unsupervised to provide specialized geoscientific advice onsite geological support. The well site geologist will study cuttings descriptions, wireline data, core samples and other relevant measures to analyze and evaluate geological information to identify the rock formations into which they are drilling. They ensure that high quality data and interpretation are delivered. GRG well site geologists are responsible to assist efficient and safe drilling operations, working constantly with drilling supervisors on site and in communication with the resource team.
