'The Bold Canadian' is a patriotic song that emerged during the War of 1812 and was cherished by Canadians. Its lyrics celebrated the successful capture of Detroit in the Michigan Territory. In terms of its origin, it is believed that a private named Cornelius Flummerfelt from the First Flank Company of the Third York Militia composed 'The Bold Canadian.' He likely penned the lyrics while marching during the Detroit campaign or on the journey back to York, Upper Canada. The purpose of the song was to encourage more Canadian militia members to join the war effort. Although the song was composed in late 1812, it was not officially published until 1907. The Niagara Historical Society included a portion of the song in a pamphlet about Isaac Brock. Prior to that, the song had been passed down through oral traditions, resulting in different versions over time. It wasn't until 1927 that complete versions of the song were published by the Ontario Historical Society, which included two distinct variations. A third version was published in 1960, featuring additional variations in stanzas and their order. Despite its lack of official publication, "The Bold Canadian" remained popular in Canada throughout the nineteenth century. In contrast, similar American songs lost their popularity by the end of the 1840s.
