United Airlines is in the middle of an intense legal dispute with an FAA safety inspector who received a lifetime ban after he allegedly reported safety concerns while onboard as a passenger. If the carrier loses, its actions could cost it upwards of $12 million. The DOT Inspector General has launched an audit of the FAA Controller Training Academy in Oklahoma City to reviews delays in training enough air traffic controllers. The DOT memorandum says the academy is facing considerable challenges with training, including a shortage of qualified instructors, training-capacity limitations, an outdated curriculum, and high training failure rates.
