In this video we look at the iron-carbon phase diagram of white cast iron (metastable system). While steels have a carbon content of less than 2.06%, the carbon concentration in cast iron is above this limit. Unlike steels, cast irons have a eutectic-based microstructure, which gives these materials excellent casting properties. The eutectic phase mixture of pearlite and cementite is called ledeburite.
