The Civil Constitution of the Clergy was enacted by the French National Constituent Assembly in 1790 in order to establish the French Catholic Church as a civil religion. Rather than simply separating Church and State, the Civil Constitution placed the Church under state control with several regulations. The Civil Constitution of the Clergy provides an important link between the liberal French Revolution of 1789 and the radical French Revolution of 1793. This lecture is chiefly intended for AP European History students, but will be good for World History and Western Civilization courses, as well as lifelong learners.
