February 28, 2025: For decades, the United States has been a critical player in supporting the response to HIV/AIDS in southern Africa. The United States’ President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the largest commitment by any nation to address a single disease, has been instrumental in providing these nations with life-prolonging HIV-suppressing therapies and supporting prevention programs. However, recent shifts in U.S. policy as mandated by executive orders from the second Trump administration threaten to disrupt life-saving humanitarian aid programs, negate decades of progress and jeopardize the health and lives of millions of African citizens. Pandemic Center Senior Adviser Wilmot James, Ph.D., convenes a panel of experts to discuss these issues. The panel includes: ° Glenda Gray, MB BCh, FC Paeds, DSc (hc), OMS, Director of the Infectious Disease and Oncology Research Institute (IDORI) at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, former President and CEO of the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) ° Stephanie Psaki, Ph.D., Distinguished Senior Fellow in Global Health Security at the Brown University School of Public Health, former U.S. Coordinator for Global Health Security, The White House This webinar is part of the Pandemics & Society series, which focuses on current pandemic threats and response systems as well as how to build preparedness for the future.
