Economics is the science that studies how people make, sell, and use goods and services. Every time we buy something from a supermarket or shopping mall, we are practicing economics. Economics helps us understand how people exchange goods and services and how trade plays an important role in our daily lives. WHAT IS TRADE? Trade is the exchange of goods or services between people. Trade happens every day around the world. WHAT ARE GOODS? Goods are things that we can see, touch, hold, use, or eat. Examples: Food Clothes Furniture Toys WHAT ARE SERVICES? Services are activities done for you by someone else. Examples: Doctor Restaurant Hair salon Taxi driver BARTERING VS MONEY The earliest form of trade was bartering. Bartering means exchanging goods and services directly without using money. The main difference between trade and bartering is: Trade uses money. Bartering does NOT use money. WHY WAS BARTERING DIFFICULT? Bartering required matching wants and needs between two people. For example, if a farmer has wheat and wants tools, he must find someone who: 1. Has tools 2. Needs wheat This was difficult and sometimes required traveling long distances. WHY IS MONEY IMPORTANT? Money (coins and paper bills) made trade easier.
