80th Anniversary of the Liberation of Manila (Speech) 02/22/2025

Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City February 22, 2025 "We are privileged to have not seen what you have seen, and to not have ingrained in our memories what you have gone through. May we continue to deserve living and thriving in this world you have built for us," remarked President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. when he led the nation in commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Manila, emphasizing the immense sacrifices made by Filipino and American soldiers, as well as civilians, during one of the most difficult periods in Philippine history. In his speech delivered at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial in Taguig City, President Marcos Jr. recalled the significance of the Battle of Manila in 1945, describing it as a turning point in the country's history. He acknowledged the fierce urban combat that led to more than 1,000 American servicemen losing their lives and over 100,000 Filipino civilians perishing. He highlighted the resilience of the Filipino people and the heroism of those who fought for the nation’s freedom. Recognizing the veterans in attendance, he honored their service and acknowledged that though their numbers have dwindled over the years, their legacy endures. The Chief Executive stressed the importance of ensuring that future generations remember and preserve the sacrifices made for democracy. "I would like to believe that even if we gather to commemorate the liberation of Manila, year after year, as our predecessors before us, our deep respect has not faded nor will it ever fade; our deepest respect for the soldiers who suffered," he conveyed. The President also reaffirmed the Philippines’ commitment to peace and regional stability, stating that the country remains dedicated to diplomatic efforts and cooperation to maintain security in the Indo-Pacific. Moreover, he underscored the strong alliance between the Philippines and the United States, pointing to upcoming joint military exercises such as the Balikatan, as evidence of their enduring partnership. "May the light of their sacrifice, their nationalism, their love for a country forever scatter the shadows of war, tyranny and oppression," President Marcos Jr. concluded in his speech.
