In this third and final segment of the Knowledge Bolide Group Classification series, we worked through the detailed process of meteorite classification with guidance from Daniel. The team focused on analyzing a sample, documenting its features, and preparing for submission to the Meteoritical Bulletin database. Daniel explained how to organize and process data from the SEM, clean results, identify mineral phases, and calculate key parameters used in classification. Together, the group examined images of the slices, noting features like shock veins, chondrules, and fusion crust, while Daniel provided context from reference papers dating back to the 1960s and 1990s. The discussion highlighted the importance of representative sampling, with Daniel walking through the analysis of mineral phases such as olivine, pyroxene, and feldspar. Based on its equilibrated texture, large feldspar grains, and shock melt features, the sample was classified as an L6 chondrite with a shock stage of S5 and a weathering grade of W3. The group also talked about the variability of classification between analysts, and the balance between precision and speed when using techniques like electron microprobe analysis versus EDS. Daniel guided the team step by step through the Meteoritical Bulletin submission form, leading a collaborative discussion on the meteorite’s history, ownership, physical characteristics, petrography, and specimen holder information. Together, they worked out detailed descriptions for the report, settling on phrases such as “sand-polished dark-brown fusion crust exterior,” “visible shock veins appearing less weathered,” and “relatively few chondrules set within a fine-grained matrix.” These inputs allowed Daniel to complete the petrography and geochemistry sections with precision. Of course, many fascinating details and observations were shared during the session that didn’t make it into the final published classification—be sure to watch the video to catch the full discussion. The session wrapped up with appreciation for Daniel’s expertise as we completed every step of the classification process together. At the time of recording, the final stage—official approval and publication—was still pending. We’re thrilled to share the exciting news that this step is now complete: our group classification has been formally announced and published in the Meteoritical Bulletin Database! 🎉 The meteorite is officially recognized as NWA 17935, an L6 chondrite. This milestone marks the successful conclusion of the Knowledge Bolide Crew’s first group classification project and stands as a testament to what we can achieve together in advancing meteorite science.
