In early April 2025 I joined @DrunkOnWanderlust walking club Officially Smashed It to complete the Lyke Wake Walk. This is a 42 mile route across the North York Moors National Park from Cod Beck car park near Osmotherley to the transmission mast near Ravenscar. It is a challenge to complete it in under 24 hours, with successful walkers and runners being eligible to join the Lyke Wake Club. The route was first walked by Bill Cowley in 1955 and in the 1950s and 60s it became a popular challenge. The creation of newer long distance routes saw its popularity fall, but plenty of people make the crossing each year. We decided to take a rather more leisurely two days to complete it with an overnight stop at the Lion Inn on Blakey Ridge. It's a tough challenge with few facilities along the route and not to be underestimated. Day one follows the Cleveland Way and the Coast to Coast over the rollercoaster spine of the Cleveland Hills before joining a disused railway track over the moors to the Lion Inn.
