Mid of Morales and Queen Sofia standing together STORYLINE Spain's Queen Sofia was on hand on Tuesday as the Spanish and Bolivian governments signed an agreement which will see the return of treasure recovered from a sunken Spanish galleon. The Nuestra Senora de la Merced sailed from Lima over 200 years ago carrying a large cargo of coins struck in a mint of the southern department of Potosi, which in colonial times was a silver mining centre. The agreement, signed by Spain's Secretary of International Cooperation for Latin America, Jesus Gracia and the Bolivian Culture Minister Pablo Groux, also ensures that a portion of the property from the wreck will soon be exhibited in Bolivia. Queen Sofia silently witnessed the entire event, while Garcia highlighted the move as a symbol of historical and cultural ties that exist between the two countries. The Spanish diplomat said they are able to make this gesture following a long judicial process to regain ownership of the treasure. "This has proven to be the ideal moment for the recuperation of this treasure from the galleon," he said. Bolivian President, Evo Morales thanked the queen and said that such cooperation was the correct future path for their countries bilateral relations. "There is something that unites us - working together," he said. "What's in the past is the past, now we are in a moment of integration, in a moment of working together, respecting each other as governments and productive parties of democracy." Queen Sofia, who arrived in the South American country on Monday was declared a distinguished guest of the city of La Paz. The Spanish Royal is scheduled to spend five days in Bolivia and on Wednesday will visit the eastern part of the country.
