CPTPP UK DEAL EXPLAINED // Why did the UK Apply to Join the CPTPP Trade Partnership?

The UK today held virtual talks to become the first non-founding member to join the Asia-Pacific CPTPP. The start of these negotiations is a key part of its attempts to pivot trade away from Europe after Brexit. CPTPP stands for Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). The main advantage of the CPTPP is greater access to each other's markets and a promise to eliminate or reduce 95% of import charges or tariffs. The gains in the short term from the CPTPP for the UK will be small. However, the government estimates UK exports to the 11 members of the CPTPP will increase by 65% to £37bn by 2030. The CPTPP Agreement would prove hugely more attractive if the US were to join the CPTPP. The US accounts for around twice as much UK trade as the current CPTPP members. Trump withdrew the US from the CPTPP before it came into force in 2018. A direct trade deal between the US and UK remains complex. The CPTPP Partnership could offer a backdoor to it and boost the CPTPP’s contribution to UK GDP.
