End of the Line for CalTrain's EMD F40PH's

Presented in 4K - The end of service is near for the fleet of EMD F40PH locomotives on the CalTrain Peninsula Corridor. With electrification service officially launching the weekend of September 21st and 22nd, this will mark the end of regular scheduled diesel service north of San Jose on the CalTrain Peninsula Corridor. Service between San Jose and Gilroy will still be powered by the newer MPI diesel locomotives and Bombardier cars. The fleet of 20 EMD F40PH locomotives was delivered in 1985, along with more than 60 Bilevel “Gallery” cars, built by Japanese company Nippon Sharyo. Along with three newer MPI F40PH-2C locomotives, six MP36PH-3C locomotives, and Bombardier Bi-Level cars, these workhorses have been the mainstay of CalTrain's service fleet. New electric "electric multiple unit" sets built by Stadler have now taken over, with 19 7-car sets to ultimately be delivered. On a day in early September 2024, I ventured out to the Bay Area to get a final glimpse of the diesel powered passenger trains on the corridor. Managed to catch six of the EMD F40PH's running, an impressive number considering their imminent retirement. A productive day, and yet again, the end of an era for railroading in North America!
