A crazy prototype before the electric M3 BMW is developing the Neue Klasse platform with a prototype of more than 1,300 hp called Vision Driving Experience. This spectacular sedan gives a taste of the future iM3 (type ZA0) expected in 2028. BMW is continuing to develop the first models with the Neue Klasse platform, in particular with the engineers of its Motorsport department for what will be the first electric M3. The German manufacturer has just built a muscular prototype derived from the Vision Neue Klasse sedan concept. This vehicle with supercar performance aims to develop an electronic control module designed entirely in-house, which BMW announces as revolutionary: the Heart of Joy. Tenfold reactivity The Neue Klasse architecture is of the SDV (software-defined vehicle) type, which means that the development of its software part dictates that of its hardware part. This allows in particular to centralize certain functions in a reduced number of calculators for better efficiency. The Heart of Joy has the particularity of controlling both the transmission (acceleration, distribution of torque between the wheels, etc.) and the dynamic behavior (braking, stabilization, etc.). This allows these two groups of systems to work together with reaction times of the order of a millisecond according to the manufacturer thanks to its computing power. Incidentally, energy efficiency is improved by 25% according to the Bavarian technicians. The new prototype, named Vision Driving Experience and already nicknamed VDX by some, draws more than 1,300 hp from its four electric motors (one per wheel), for a cumulative torque approaching 18,000 Nm. The production model should not display such figures, but BMW explains that "if the control system can manage an explosion of power of this magnitude, it will be able to meet the demands of daily driving with ease". A supercar disguised as a sedan Compared to the 2023 Vision Neue Klasse concept, the VDX has been considerably widened and lowered. Its wild appearance hides active aerodynamic elements that provide it with more than 1,200 kg of downforce. The Heart of Joy and very sporty suspension increases cornering speeds, inducing lateral accelerations greater than 3G according to the manufacturer. The rims have backlit patterns that are green during acceleration, blue during regenerative braking, and orange during friction braking. The rear-view cameras of the first concept car have given way to classic mirrors, and the stripped-down interior is indeed that of a sports prototype. However, it does feature the Panoramic iDrive interface and its display strip at the foot of the windshield. Note that the Heart of Joy is supported by three other computers controlling: the basic functions (access, lighting, air conditioning, comfort equipment); infotainment; driving aids. BMW iX3, i3 and iM3 Neue Klasse approaching Still camouflaged, the BMW Vision Driving Experience differs from the pre-production model presented last December, which is also masked. It will be officially unveiled in April 2025 at the Shanghai Motor Show. Its electronic systems will be used on board the production Neue Klasse models, starting with the electric SUV iX3 (type NA5) which will be launched at the end of 2025. Next year, the electric 3 Series possibly named i3 (NA0/NA1) will join the catalog. Its M version (ZA0/ZA1) is expected by 2028. It could be called iM3, a name protected by BMW with the European Patent and Trademark Office at the end of 2023.
