Cambodia was one of our favourite countries we visited. The people were welcoming and always eager to learn about us and share their own stories. The food was amazing and of course the temples were incredible. The detail in every little corner was mesmerizing and as a result we spent just under a week wandering around various temples. We had an amazing driver who knew the best routes to take to avoid the normal busy tour schedules which meant for the majority of our time we did get to explore empty temple grounds. When we overlapped with the tour groups it was interesting to see the routes they took and the different people coming and going. There is nothing wrong with tour groups but for us we preferred to take the time to sit and enjoy our surroundings quietly rather that walk straight through to be able to see as much as possible in one day. We actually visited around 30 temples but many are together in a main temple ground where you walk between them whilst exploring. Others were much further out of the city so we did specific visits out to these. The entry passes are expensive but for us they were worth it. We had the week pass and it meant we could come and go as we pleased and not get completely burnt out trying to fit lots into a day trip. We mostly got up very early to visit the larger temples before the crowds rolled in and then later in the day when the temperature dropped we went out to the smaller temples outside of the Angkor Wat complex. Even if you are only in Siem Reap for a day just pick a couple of temples nearby each other and focus on them. They are all unique and beautiful in their own ways but don't rush around trying to fit too many in or you will miss the real beauty of the area.
