On 11 March 2011 a 9.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the east coast of Japan, prompting the second biggest nuclear meltdown of all time at the Fukushima Dai-ichi power plant. Eight years later the Japanese government has deemed much of the region as safe to return to. The population remains a fraction of what it once was, although there is a rise in one group of individuals – so-called "dark tourists".
