This was my third consecutive day visiting a place of significance relating to the Holocaust (Shoah), Plaszow & Auschwitz-Birkenau on the days before (No video of Auschwitz-Birkenau). If you can walk around this place, and either not shed a tear, or have shivers run down your spine you cannot be human. Out of respect, No Speaking and No Music. Bełżec was the first killing centre of Operation Reinhard. The Stone Pile (Metallurgical Clinker/Slag), is surrounded by a concrete path which contains cast-iron names of the towns, and the month from which people were deported from to Bełżec, to be murdered. The entire area of the memorial contains human ashes mixed with sand. Almost 500,000 were killed here between February/March 1942, and December 1942, with a short pause in executions during June and July as the Gas Chambers were rebuilt and expanded (from a Wooden Built Gas Chamber disguised as shower barracks to a much larger structure. The new building was 24 meters long and 10 meters wide and had six gas chambers, insulated with cement walls. It could process (murder) up to 1,500 victims at a time. The camp ceased operating in December 1942. The most likely reason for shutting the facility down was the lack of space for more mass graves. The burning of corpses and covering all evidence of the camp’s activity lasted until the spring of 1943. All the buildings and equipment were dismantled by June 1943. The prisoners of the last Sonderkommando tasked with the camp liquidation were transferred to the death camp in Sobibor. Realising their imminent fate, they attacked the guards at the unloading ramp of Sobibór and were all shot upon their arrival. Only one man survived the transport to Sobibor, Chaim Hirszman, who escaped from the train. The only other known escapee from Bełżec who shared their testimony for the Investigation of Nazi German Crimes, was Rudolf Reder. During the construction of the Memorial the trees planted by the SS in their attempt to remove all traces of evidence were removed and only the oaks, that witnessed the genocide, were retained, the Silent Witnesses.
