A Predator is Born: The Full Story of Lyra & Rowan Raising Five Kestrel Chicks | Nest Box Live

Watch the incredible full story of Lyra & Rowan, a Eurasian Kestrel couple, as they raise five wonderful chicks in our nest box in the north of England. Our cameras capture, up close, the special moment of the eggs hatching, and we follow their journey until they eventually fledge the nest. The story starts at the end of March when Lyra & Rowan reunite after spending the Winter apart. However, Lyra can't rely on Rowan just yet. He must prove to her that he can be a good provider. We witness a classic Kestrel display of courtship where he brings food to her inside the nest box. He brings her birds, voles and mice to show he can be a reliable father. This behaviour continues for a few weeks, and then we see the first egg arrive, followed by four others, each laying 48 hours apart. She incubates them for a whole month before they start to hatch in late May. After all five eggs successfully hatch, Rowan finds food and brings it to the nest, where Lyra carefully feeds it to the chicks. The chicks then spent the following weeks growing, thanks to Rowan's excellent work.
