Sea Surface Microlayer Documentary Teaser

The sea surface microlayer (SML) is a boundary just micrometers to a millimeter thick and is the ocean's most critical interface, where all air–sea interactions occur. Globally present and biologically rich, the SML is typically enriched in organic matter and microbial life, forming a biofilm-like structure that modulates gas exchange, organic cycling, and microbial processes. In this field campaign, BASS team explored the SML in its natural setting using high-resolution in situ sampling with our autonomous surface vehicles Halobates and Atlanticus Glaucus, supported by profiling sensors and environmental observations.
