A jubilant convoy @Kanungu Express TV snaked through Kanungu District as newly elected LC5 Chairperson Byamukama Frances Kapesha, an independent candidate, toured the villages to thank residents for their overwhelming support. The celebrations followed his official declaration at the District Headquarters Tall Centre, inside the Council Hall in Kanungu Town Council. District Returning Officer Mukundane David announced the results, confirming that Byamukama Frances Kapesha secured victory with 58.40 percent of the total votes, defeating his opponent Justus Tibesigwa of the NRM, who garnered 41.60 percent. Mukundane praised the election as free and fair, noting it was even better conducted than the recent Parliamentary polls, which had drawn several complaints. In his victory speech, Kapesha pledged to serve diligently and emphasized unity, saying divisionism has long hindered development in Kanungu. He assured residents that his leadership would prioritize inclusivity and progress. Councillor Byaruhanga Frank, who went through unopposed, expressed readiness to work closely with the new chairperson to ensure effective service delivery. The declaration, however, was not without tension. The NRM Secretariat raised grievances, alleging irregularities in the LC5 election process. Despite these claims, observers described the election as peaceful and credible, marking a significant milestone in Kanungu’s local governance.
