Most laboratory techniques utilize biosafety cabinets (BSCs) in order to provide contamination control of the experiments, through the use of airflow and HEPA filters to remove contaminants from the environment. HEPA filters are very effective at removing various sized contaminants, but do not prevent gasses and vapors from penetrating through them. Researchers have speculated that DNA may not be captured by HEPA filters due to its small size, and may allow for contamination of subsequent experiments by aerosolized DNA. Here you will learn how much DNA can penetrate a HEPA filter and which style of BSC is the most appropriate for work involving DNA. What will you learn: Biosafety Cabinets and HEPA filters Containment of DNA by HEPA filter and potential DNA contamination in experiments How to choose the right Biosafety Cabinet for your work involving DNA Speaker: Kara Held, Ph.D. Science Director, The Baker Company Original Broadcast: May 31st, 2018
