He often used to present an old song with a completely new tune. Such an incedent had been described by Shantimoyee Dutta, daughter of Pt.Sitanath Tattwabhushan. She had spent her childhood in ‘Devalaya’, a house next to the publication house of ‘Probasi’ and Ramananda Chattopadhyaya’s house. Rabindranath was a frequent visitor there. A literary and musical soiree used to be organized on the verandah with a mat spread on. She had described in her memoire ‘Mohilader Smritite Rabindranath’ – … On request from Sita devi Rabindranath once presented the song ‘Aamar din phuralo …’. It was his speciality that he would ask people around him to sing along with him and pick up the song. The tune of this song was completely new to all present there and they all looked at his face silently. He asked them after the song was completed – ‘How did you keep quiet, couldn’t you sing along?’ Sita devi replied – ‘How could we do that, you had started with a complete new melody. This one is not known to us.’ The poet smiled at them – ‘Is it? Well, let me listen to the one you know.’ When they presented the song with the other tune Rabindranath raised his eyebrow – ‘Oh! May be it was my fault.’ ================================== Bengal Foundation has been promoting Bengali music for decades in order to nurture and uphold the musical traditions of Bengal.
