Beginning in February 1982 Jeff and Mike literally fumbled through a few songs Mike had written. Before starting the group Mike Stand was adamant that he was “not” going to be the lead singer/songwriter and certainly had no intention of being the band spokesman. But, God had other ideas. Steve and their first bass player Ron Baca came on board around May of 1982. The group played its first concert in July of 1982 at the First Baptist Church in Fullerton. In 1983 Ric Alba joined the group and for 6 years they had what many believe was the essential core of the Altar Boys: Mike, Jeff, Ric and Steve. However, in 1984 Steve left the group and formed "The Fourth Watch" with former Undercover lead singer Bill Walton. Steve rejoined Altar Boys in 1989 and played with them off and on until 1992. In 1990 Mark Robertson replaced Ric as the bass player. He was with the group when they played most of their major dates in the Southern California area and the reunion shows, as well. Bob Wohler also filled in on bass from time to time, along with Chuck Spitaru, and Dave Brighton on guitar. In 1988, Chuck Cummings filled in for Jeff Crandall (who had broken his arm in an skateboarding accident) on a tour of England. Altar Boys played its last show at Castle Park in Riverside on December 31, 1992 (that final lineup was: Mike Stand, Jeff Crandall, Bob Wohler and Dave Brighton). The band did a number of reunion shows beginning in 1998 including: Cornerstone 2000, and 2002, the Broken Records event in 2005. The Altar Boys final performance was on June of 2006 at the Del Mar fairgrounds. From the beginning their goal was simple: Tell people about the Good News of Jesus Christ. And so they did, for 10 1/2 years, playing for anybody and everybody, any place, and anywhere. They really had no visions of grander or fame. Little did they know that their travels would take them on major concert tours throughout the United States, England, Holland, Canada and even (of all places) Chile, South America. And then there were the records, five of them to be exact: Beginning with Altar Boys One, When You’re a Rebel, Gut Level Music, Against The Grain, and finally Forever Mercy. Each of them unique. Each of them a reflection of their joy, disappointments, inner struggles, victories, hopes, testimonies of faith and desire to glorify God. Many believe they have all stood the test of time very well. Along the way, the band experienced a lot of bumpy roads - as most bands do. They were transversing through a lot of uncharted territory. At the time they didn’t consider themselves to be trail blazers. But as they look back now, they understand that those on the front line are usually the ones who get hit the hardest - its inevitable. While hacking their way through the jungle they really didn’t have the time to analyze everything. The group was too busy slugging away, hoping for the best and relying on God for strength and endurance. Though it’s been a number of years since Altar Boys first stepped foot on a platform, they will never be able forget both the many lives that have been affected along the way and how they were equally changed by the ministry of the Altar Boys. The group will always be amazed at all the “wonderful things God has done.” To sum it all up, through the many miles of touring and all the hours spent in the studio, all the Altar Boys really wanted to do is to communicate to its audience is that: “God cares, God cares.” 1.
