Japanese Manhole Covers: Matsudo's White Koala! | LIFE IN JAPAN

In this video, I had two goals: 1) find a eucalyptus tree, and 2) find a painted koala manhole cover. Japanese towns, cities, and prefectures have dozens of different and unique designs highlighting some kind of culture or history from that specific area. Matsudo's official tree is the eucalyptus tree, which is why Matsudo has koalas on a eucalyptus tree on many of their manhole covers. Usually, these manhole covers are not painted. But near Matsudo Station, there are a few colored ones, including a few with the white koalas on them. Their second manhole cover design is of the boat crossing at Yagiri no Watashi, which depicts the scene of the boat crossing the Edo River. I believe there is also a painted version of this one, but I need to make a different video looking for that one. The Edo River used to have many river crossings from surrounding areas into Edo (old Tokyo), but all of them are gone except for the crossing at Yagiri no Watashi, which connects Shibamata to Matsudo. Matsudo City is the sister city of Whitehorse City, a small area near Melbourne, in the state of Victoria, Australia. The eucalyptus trees were found at Matsudo Central Park, just a few blocks away from Matsudo Station. The painted manhole covers are on a side street right outside of the east exit of Matsudo Station. This was a fun little adventure for me and I enjoyed searching around for about 2+ hours trying to find the painted manhole cover.
