You know all about Operation Overlord, D-Day, the Allied invasion of western France. But how about Operation Dragoon, a similar invasion of southern France? Overlord got more headlines than Dragoon, but together -- Overlord in June 1944 and Dragoon in August 1944 -- they formed a giant pincer that destroyed German forces in France. You'll get the full story in this video. Dragoon was initially planned for the same time as Overlord, but lack of resources delayed it. On August 15, 1944, preceded by a massive air and naval bombardment and commando raids on coastal defenses, three American infantry divisions landed on the French Riviera -- today some of Europe's priciest real estate. Mediterranean ports of Marseille and Toulon by August 28, and the speed with which they were put back in working order, meant the Allied forces streaming into Normandy could more quickly be supplied for their final push into Germany.
