Houtong is a small town located in the Ruifang District of New Taipei City, northern Taiwan. Once a thriving coal mining community, Houtong has reinvented itself as a charming tourist destination known worldwide as “Cat Village.” ⛏️ From Coal Mining Town to Tourist Attraction During the early 20th century, Houtong prospered as one of Taiwan’s most productive coal mining areas. At its peak, thousands of miners and their families lived and worked here. However, as the coal industry declined in the late 20th century, the town’s population dropped significantly. In the 2000s, local residents began caring for abandoned and stray cats. Visitors started coming to see the growing feline population, and the town gradually transformed into a cat-themed destination that attracts animal lovers from around the world. 🐾 Cat Culture and Attractions Today, Houtong is home to dozens of friendly cats that roam freely around the streets and public spaces.
