The state of New Jersey is no longer on track to contain the spread of the coronavirus. That’s according to a widely used database, COVID Act now. On Monday, Gov. Phil Murphy warned the rate of transmission, or the rate at which COVID-19 spreads from one person to another, is above 1 for the first time in 10 weeks. This means that each person testing positive is infecting at least one other person. That’s a key indicator state officials have watched closely throughout the pandemic. Another 216 positive cases are being reported, pushing our statewide total to 173,611 with 20 new deaths and 15,229 confirmed and probable fatalities caused by COVID-19. The daily numbers may be dropping, but Murphy says it’s all a sign we need to do more. Over the weekend he called for a national response to COVID-19 that includes mandatory outdoor face coverings, though he hasn’t made that a requirement in New Jersey.
