Thiès, Senegal - For the past five days, a team of researchers from the University of Heidelberg, led by Charlotte Robert, a doctoral student in public health, has been visiting Senegal to launch a new initiative in partnership with DAHW. The project in question is a feasibility study of the Skin UP application, developed by the World Health Organization (WHO). Strengthening Diagnostic Capabilities The Skin UP application aims to assist in the diagnosis of neglected tropical skin diseases. By using artificial intelligence, this application aims to accurately identify these diseases, particularly in areas where human resources and specialists are scarce. A Week of Intensive Work Accompanied by her colleague Dominique, Charlotte Robert and her team are in Senegal for a week. After starting their mission in Dakar, where they met with DAHW partners to discuss the project's objectives, the team traveled to the hospital in Thiès. There, they collaborated with the dermatology department to initiate data collection necessary for the feasibility study. Tests and Future Developments At this stage, the specific areas for the deployment of the application have not yet been determined. Current activities are taking place in former social resettlement villages, but a more detailed assessment of target areas is still needed. "We started with performance tests of the application," explains Charlotte Robert. "Next, we will engage with stakeholders and people with field experience in Senegal to ensure that our intervention is relevant and effective."
