Synopsis of lesson 206: Abiniveṣa: the Vāsanā of clinging to existence, to life. It is an unexceptional Vāsanā. It affects all. One who has philosophical knowledge of reality also has Abhiniveṣa. It is there in the tiniest life form to the one who has philosophical knowledge of mortality of life. Dvesa x Dvesa or Raga multiplied by 4 is Abhinivesa. Then what about the attempts at taking one own's life? One who commits suicide, cannot have done so without Rāgātiṣayatā and Dveṣātiṣayatā. Here there is no absence of attachment and aversion. In fact, when a person feels that they cannot escape from the grips of aversion and the impossibility of fulfilling attachment, the suicidal attempt is made. Eg., love not being fructified or fulfilled. Excessive Abhiniveṣa leads to the attempt to end existence when the desire seems to be not fulfilled. Person wants to end life in that condition and is so attached to that thought. And not being able to do that is unacceptable, tormenting, and hence the desire to give up the very existence. Suicide takes place on account of Vṛtti which is different from Kleṣa. It happens because of Rāgātiṣayatā and Dveṣātiṣayatā. All manifestations of life form have Kleṣas of Vāsanas. On the other hand, life principle is eternal. Only when Citta is dis-mantled, then these Vāsanās will go away. That is the Charitrādhikara Citta; Samāptādhikara Citta; Jivanamukta Citta. Then there is no locus for Vāsanā. Kleṣas are not afflictions. They reinforce bondage and the potential conditions to have reincarnation after reincarnation. They give us life and death cycles. Kleṣa Vṛtti gives Kāma, Krodha, Moha, Mada, Mātsarya. Most of the time, we relish Klesas. They are our '‘party-packs'’. They are not afflictions, but rather our gratifications. Klesas give rise to Karmāṣaya and Karmabandhas; life and death; life conditions which are likeable as well as dislikeable. Kleṣas have to be attenuated for which they have to be countered, conquered and vanquished. Patañjali counters Sukṣma Kleṣas. But first, we Adhama-adhamādhikaris have to counter gross Kleṣas.
