Do you feel like they are taking advantage of your kindness and respect? Setting boundaries is essential for maintaining healthy relationships in the workplace. In this video, I will provide four tips on how to set up clear boundaries with difficult coworkers so that you can get more out of work without feeling taken advantage of. In today's free online communication skills training video, I'm going to give you a three-step strategy for setting boundaries called the B-I-B. #settingboundaries #difficultconversations #communicationtraining Step 1: Boundaries. Clearly state what the boundary is that you're struggling to maintain. Step 2: Instructions: Give clear instructions on what you would like the person to do (or what you will do) the next time the issue comes up. Step 3: Benefit: State what the benefit is for the other person for respecting your boundaries. For example, if you're having difficulty with a coworker who is always coming to your desk and interrupting you when you’re trying to work, your B-I-B might look like this: Boundary: I need uninterrupted time in order to focus on my work. Instruction: Please send me a message if you need my help and I will get back to you as soon as I can. Benefit: This will help us both be more productive so we can get our work done faster. Another example could be if a colleague is constantly asking for your help on their projects without giving you enough time to prepare. Your B-I-B might look like this: Boundary: I need at least two days' notice before I can commit to helping with a project of yours. Instruction: Please let me know two days in advance when you have something that needs my attention and I will do my best to accommodate it. Benefit: This will give me time to plan my schedule and make sure that I'm able to give the project my full attention. Another example could be: Boundary: I need to be able to manage my own schedule. Instruction: Please let me know when something needs my attention and I will prioritize it accordingly. Benefit: This will help us both stay organized and efficiently get our work done. By using this three-step strategy, you can clearly communicate your boundaries in a respectful way while making sure that everyone involved is still invested in the success of the project or task at hand. Setting clear boundaries with difficult coworkers can ultimately lead to more productive working relationships and a better overall work environment. Although setting boundaries may feel intimidating, remember that it is essential for maintaining healthy relationships in the workplace and for helping you reach your goals without feeling taken advantage of. By clearly communicating your boundaries, instructions, and benefits, you will create an environment where everyone feels respected and valued.
