Search Continues Over Coalition Following the June 7 general elections, the 12 years long government of the Justice and Development Party - also known as the AK Party - has come to an end. Political parties aim to form a coalition and seize the opportunity to take part in the new government. There is debate among the parties over whom to form coalition with. The former opposition parties have issued “red lines” and conditions to form a coalition. Turkey’s prime minister and leader of the AK Party Ahmet Davutoglu has said current political situation is an opportunity for political parties to settle on existing matters. He has criticised “red lines” and demands issued by the other parties in the parliament as contradicting consensus building. Davutoglu has called on all parties to reconcile their differences and act responsibly. The prime minister has said that the AK Party has not closed its doors to any party in formation of coalition government. He called on the public to remain calm and said the AK Party will not allow the gains it has made in the past 12 years to be lost. ‘Red Lines’ vs. Resolution Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has also called on political parties to favor a resolution over chaos. He said that Turkey is now facing a different picture in the post-election period. He has asked all political parties to take responsibility for the sake of Turkey’s future and leave their egos aside. However statements have come from parties indicating that reconciliation in order to form a coalition will be difficult. Officials from the The Nationalist Movement Party have once again confirmed that any coalition with the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party is non-negotiable. HDP officials have released a post-election declaration which hints that the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party’s imprisoned leader Abdullah Ocalan should be released in order for Kurdish-Turkish peace talks to resume. The Peace Process aimed at ending the three decades old conflict between the government and the PKK is one of the key issues waiting to be addressed in the new term. AK Party-CHP Coalition Scenario One main area agreed upon by the parties is avoiding an early election. An AK Party and Republican People’s Party coalition is considered to be most likely by political analysts. President Erdogan and former head of the CHP Deniz Baykal met in Ankara concerning the appointment of Baykal as Turkey’s interim parliamentary speaker. According to unofficial results in the last election the AK Party gained 40.8 percent of the vote and CHP won 25.1 percent. This makes them the two largest parties in the parliament and enables them to form a majority government. However some CHP officials have insisted on no coalition with the AK Party. This would require the CHP to form a coalition along with the MHP and HDP together. Considering the MHP’s refusal to form a coalition with HDP, CHP will likely be forced to reach an agreement with the AK Party. If not, another likely scenario is formation of a coalition between the AK Party and MHP. A less likely possibility is a coalition between the AK Party and HDP.
