Today, we explore one of horology’s oldest comparisons, Rolex vs. Tudor. What makes these brands so similar? And what sets them apart? Click here to shop to hottest Rolex watches on the market: https://www.bobswatches.com/rolex/ Bob’s Watches doesn’t just buy and sell Rolex watches. We also have a large selection of pre-owned Tudor watches available for purchase now: https://www.bobswatches.com/tudor/ Tudor is the brainchild of Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf. His goal in creating the Tudor brand in 1926 was to offer the same exceptional quality as Rolex, but at a more obtainable price point. To do this, he outsourced the movements and used many Rolex parts, such as the clasps, crowns, and even the iconic waterproof Oyster case. The brand flourished until the year 2000 when sales started to die down. However, their slump only lasted a few years until around 2009/2010. The brand was in the midst of a re-launch that eventually saw the debut of their first in-house movement alongside the North Flag model in 2015. This was an important milestone for Tudor that began to separate them from Rolex further and establish them as a more independent company. Rolex’s DNA is still apparent in many of their models, such as the Black Bay, which somewhat resembles the Rolex Submariner. In this video, we will discuss the similarities and differences between both brands in the battle of Rolex vs. Tudor. Click here to learn more: https://www.bobswatches.com/rolex-blo... The Movement: While Tudor does not yet operate solely on their own movements, they continue to incorporate them into more and more watches they produce. It’s also important to note that Tudor’s movements are entirely different than those manufactured by Rolex. Tudor and Rolex movements are both COSC certified. However, Tudor is accurate up to -4/+6 seconds per day, while Rolex promises accuracy up to -2/+2 seconds per day. Rolex also keeps its Paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring and other proprietary technologies within their catalog. Vintage-Inspired Watches: One noticeable difference between the two brands is the prevalence of tribute watches in the Tudor catalog. Rolex has never produced vintage-inspired watches. Instead, the brand prefers to build upon the design of its pillar models. Heritage watches, on the other hand, make up a significant portion of the Tudor catalog. Material used: Tudor has since adopted the practice of incorporating modern materials into their catalog, such as more resilient ceramic and Titanium. Ceramic bezels are a mainstay on nearly every Rolex tool watch. Although, the company has yet to release an all-titanium model. They do, however, use the material on the case back of the Deepsea. Stainless steel is prevalent in both brands’ catalogs. Rolex uses superior Oystersteel from the 904L stainless steel family. Tudor, on the other hand, employs 316L stainless steel. Tudor and Rolex both include gold in their catalog. The quality of Rolex gold is simply unmatched. It is forged in-house using the finest metals available. Furthermore, all modern gold Rolex watches are produced in solid gold. Tudor, on the other hand, features gold-capped parts. This difference is crucial in maintaining the affordable price gap between the companies. Popular Tudor and Rolex Models: Nearly every major watch brand on the market offers a rounded portfolio containing both dress and sports references. Rolex and Tudor are no exception. While Rolex enjoys equal amounts of success from both categories, tool watches seem to be Tudor’s bread and butter. You’ve probably caught yourself eyeing either the Rolex, Daytona, Submariner, Day-Date, or Oyster Perpetual Datejust at some point because each of those watches is highly celebrated and desired. Tudor’s most popular model remains the Black Bay, which dominates the brand’s catalog in a broad selection of design sets. Rolex Price vs. Tudor Price: It’s no secret that Tudor is the more affordable option compared to Rolex. At retail, Rolex prices are nearly double those of Tudor. Rolex’s most popular models are also harder to purchase at retail, leaving many collectors on waitlists that span years. Many of Tudors most sought-after models are also sold-out at authorized dealers. However, the wait isn’t nearly as long as Rolex. That also brings up the topic of resell value. For many who don’t want to join a lengthy waitlist, the secondary market is the best option. While you might pay slightly more than retail to get your hands on the hottest Tudor watch, some of the most sought-after Rolexes command up to twice their retail value pre-owned.
