For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020, hand-ringing of the bells of Kirkwall's magnificent St Magnus Cathedral has begun again. The three ancient bells of the Norse cathedral were traditionally rung every Sunday morning to welcome the congregation to the service. That practice has only just restarted, allowing a familiar sound to fill the sky around the town once more. Using a system of handheld ropes and a foot pedal, the Sunday bells start slowly, a single chime every ten seconds, before gradually being rung in faster and more complex patterns.
