Bronica Zenzanon MC 80mm f/2.4 (Bronica's Best Standard Lens?) | Round Glass Review

Bronica standard kit lenses were always stellar, and that should be expected for lenses of this price range and for the intended audience that Bronica had. The Zenzanon MC 80mm f/2.4, however, is a standout among the class of exceptional standard lenses. Bronica fans will tell you, and I concur in general with this statement, that the Bronica system had the best-quality standard lenses of any 6X6 system of the time and for twenty or more years after. The Nikkor, Zeiss, and Zenzanon standard offerings are all exceptional and, without any real room for argument, they stand at the front of the line for similar-vintage standard lenses. Of them, the Zenzanon is widely considered to be the best from a technical perspective. What that means is that the Zenzanon 80mm may deliver the best images technically, but they do lack a bit of the character that some of the other standard Bronica lenses can impart. As I’ve said in multiple videos in this series, lenses are defined not by their perfections but by their flaws. The Zenzanon MC 80mm f/2.4 simply has very, very few flaws. Now that said, were I shooting a professional portrait or wedding event with this lens would I want technical perfection? Definitely yes, and that’s what this lens is meant to do and do well. So for those of you looking at this lens as a potential option for professional work using medium-format film, you will struggle to find a better option and the cost will far outweigh what this lens fetches.
