Who Was Sojourner Truth?

An abolitionist and women’s rights advocate during the 19th century, Sojourner Truth called for the elimination of all forms of discrimination, rather than merely a reduction in it. Truth escaped enslavement and, despite being unable to read or write, rose to be a leader in the fight for equality and fair treatment for women and African Americans. Through her lectures, Truth highlighted the exclusion of Black women from the women’s rights movement and compelled audiences to recognize the interconnectedness of racial and gender inequalities. By watching this introductory video, designed for grades 3-8, students will explore the life and journey of Sojourner Truth, from an enslaved person to an inspirational champion for social justice and equality.
