Full story on MedPage Today: http://www.medpagetoday.com/PainManag... Sometimes when you're spreading some holiday joy, you can wind up spreading an important message, too. That's what happened when Michael E. Barton, MD, an emergency medicine physician at Sewickley Valley Hospital near Pittsburgh, started posting his parody videos on YouTube 5 years ago. "I started creating these videos as entertainment for our ED staff at our annual holiday parties," Barton explains, "but this year I decided to work in a message." Dr. Barton's holiday party videos have ranged from singing about Press Ganey Report scores to dancing around to a "Whoot! There it is!" office singalong. But as more and more people watched the videos, Barton saw an opportunity. This past December, his ED staff helped him create a parody on Taylor Swift's "We Are Never Getting Back Together" -- aptly titled "We Are Never Giving You Drugs in the ER" -- which they intended to focus on the growing issue of prescription drug abuse. Barton said he hopes the message is not misconstrued as an insensitive blanket statement, but merely as an entertaining way to highlight the actual addiction issue facing hospitals across the country. "It has been received so well, I expect it won't be the last time I try to make a video informative and entertaining," Barton told MedPage Today. "I've already had some ideas thrown my way from other EM doctors." Above, Barton explains the making of his video.
