On this week’s episode of Emajiteni, we’re finally back with no guests, just us. It’s been a while since we’ve had a pure Emajiteni conversation, and this episode feels like a proper reset. We started with goal-setting. Why do people set goals every year? Why is it important? And with December already here, people are thinking about New Year’s resolutions, but what happened to last year’s ones? Shepard didn’t hold back: “You said this year is your year. You said you’ll make money, you said you’ll go to gym and lose weight… what happened?” The conversation moved into helping people. Ace shared how going home made him reflect on wanting to help his young nephew who’s an artist. Shepard admitted he’s in a season of choosing himself, he has helped many people before, but right now, he’s tired and no longer pouring into everyone. Then we went deeper. We unpacked the family dynamics in Black homes, especially around December. For many, “going home” is not just going home. It means walking into expectations, tensions, the “family dreamer” pressure, neighbour comparisons, and unresolved family stories. Some people even dread December because the emotional weight is real. Ace said it perfectly: “You start feeling it in November that it’s time to go home. Everywhere you go you can see the spirit of family even in malls and in advertisements.” Jack added a different angle. He shared techniques and advice specifically for people who are seen as breadwinners in their families. His message was simple but powerful: When you go home, remember you are still a child there. Don’t carry the weight of being an adult in every space — at home, you are someone’s son, someone’s daughter. Allow yourself to just be a child again. The conversation became a space for honesty, reflection, and growth touching on goals, identity, home, and the silent expectations we carry. If you enjoy real conversations, this one is for you.
