Squamous Cell Carcinoma It is a cancer that can occur in the oral cavity and is mostly due to tobacco chewing, such as paan chewing or cigarette smoking, especially more than 2 packs per day. It can also occur due to UV radiation from the sun rays, especially in fair skinned people, alcohol consumption, due to certain nutritional deficiencies or from the HPV virus. It can occur in different areas of the mouth depending on the cause of it, such as border of the lip due to UV radiation, inner cheek due to paan chewing or the lower surface and sides of the tongue. It presents in the form of either a red sore, whitish patch or a lump that does not heal even after 2 weeks. In severe cases it can affect the movement of tongue or mouth opening. Biopsy is done as the first line of treatment, where the sample is taken to identify the cells. If it is confirmed, other measures may be taken such as radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or surgical removal of the affected area.
