Irene Abril Cabezas - The Simons Observatory: on the quest for primordial gravitational waves

Abstract: The Simons Observatory (SO) is defining a new frontier in cosmology, measuring to incredible precision the cosmic microwave background (CMB). It is equipped with multiple small-aperture telescopes (SATs) targeting a possible stochastic background of primordial gravitational waves imprinted in the CMB, or B-modes. I will summarise the current status of the analysis and discuss the main challenges, focusing on the impact of Galactic foregrounds, in particular thermal dust emission. Finally, I will present the updated forecasts for the scientific performance of the SATs, emphasising the potential of SO to deliver insights into the physics of the early Universe in the upcoming decade.
