Professor Abraham F Lowenthal and Sergio Bitar will discuss the challenges an attempt of democratic transition faces and how to tackle them. The session will not be about the status of democracy (or lack thereof) in any particular country; our guests will discuss the challenges of democratization in general. After interviewing thirteen presidents and prime ministers who played key roles in democratic transitions in their respective countries, Bitar and Lowenthal have authored the much celebrated volume Democratic Transitions: Conversations with World Leaders (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2015). The book has been translated into multiple languages and a summary of it is available in an article that they penned for the Foreign Affairs (January/February, 2016) magazine, "Getting to Democracy: Lessons From Successful Transitions." Sergio Bitar, president of Chile’s Foundation for Democracy, is a political leader and public intellectual. Bitar is a veteran parliamentarian and former minister. He was imprisoned by Pinochet's regime. Abraham F. Lowenthal, professor emeritus at the University of Southern California, was the founding director of the Inter-American Dialogue and the Wilson Center’s Latin American Program. Professor Lowenthal is an expert on democratization and Latin America. He received his AB, MPA, and PhD degrees from Harvard University
