High in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado stands one of America’s most legendary haunted locations — The Stanley Hotel. Opened on July 4, 1909 by Freelan Oscar Stanley, co-founder of the Stanley Motor Carriage Company, the hotel was originally built as a luxury mountain resort in Estes Park, Colorado. Designed with elegance, electricity, and innovation rare for its time, The Stanley was never meant to be associated with fear. But history had other plans. In 1911, a violent gas explosion in Room 217 injured housekeeper Elizabeth Wilson — an event that would later become central to the hotel’s paranormal lore. Guests staying in Room 217 have since reported unexplained activity: luggage unpacked overnight, lights flickering, and the feeling of a presence near the bed. Decades later, on October 30, 1974, author Stephen King checked into Room 217. The nearly empty hotel inspired his nightmare — and ultimately his iconic novel The Shining. Though the 1980 film adaptation directed by Stanley Kubrick was filmed elsewhere, the psychological inspiration came directly from The Stanley Hotel. Today, The Stanley is considered one of the most haunted hotels in America. Guests report hearing children running on the fourth floor, piano music playing inside the Concert Hall, and shadow figures near the Grand Staircase. Some believe the spirit of Elizabeth Wilson still “cares” for guests. Others claim to encounter the presence of F.O. Stanley himself. In 2010, Ghost Adventures investigated The Stanley Hotel, conducting a full overnight lockdown. Zak Bagans, Nick Groff, and Aaron Goodwin captured EVPs inside Room 217, intelligent responses on the fourth floor, and unexplained audio near the piano. Unlike darker hauntings, The Stanley does not feel violent. It feels intelligent. Aware. Watchful. Is it residual energy layered over a century of history? The power of suggestion amplified by The Shining? Or is something truly still walking the halls? More than 100 years after its grand opening, The Stanley Hotel remains one of the most mysterious and debated paranormal locations in the world. #StanleyHotel #Room217 #TheShining #GhostAdventures #HauntedHotel #StephenKing #ParanormalInvestigation #EstesPark #HauntedColorado #ZakBagans #RealGhostStories #ParanormalDocumentary #ScaryHistory
