In fact, the challenge consists in replicating the basic baseball stitch used for steering wheels. Cross stitching pattern, slanted stitching patterns, etc. would be much easier to perform, because I would just interlace a long strip of leather through the holes done aside the edges until creating the desired pattern that overlaps the french seams.
